Issue 47: Lupita Nyong’o describes the perfect day

Hi there nesstie,

A Lupita Nyong’o quote from a 2019 interview with the New York Times is making the rounds on Twitter. That’s probably because it conjures up a fantasy that’s so cozy and so perfect, it moves into your mind rent-free, clearing out the cobwebs in your brain like a hot knife through butter. When asked to describe her ideal reading experience, here’s the illusory sanctuary Nyong’o blesses us with:

“I have never been skiing, but I have a fantasy about going on a skiing trip with a bunch of friends and spending my time alone, in a cabin, by a fireplace, dressed in a cozy fleece onesie, wrapped in a warm blanket with a big mug of hot chocolate, reading a big, fat, juicy book that I have been intending to read all my life, while everybody else does the skiing. I myself would never actually go outside to ski. Instead I would passionately share my reading adventures with my exhausted, sunburned friends at the end of the day, over hearty dinners that I did not cook.”

I respect the total absence of FOMO here, because that’s the purest headspace to find zen. The joy is finally finally getting to that one thing you keep putting off (read that book, knit that sweater, watch that documentary, call that friend, cook that recipe) in a place that feels safe and comfortable and warm. And most importantly, low-maintenance.

If you’re fortunate enough to have some time off at the end of the year, figure out what your ideal pastime experience looks like—the where, the what, the when, the how—and carve out a nook of time dedicated to making that happen.

To finding your own fleece onesie ski cabin hot chocolate reading adventure,
